Frequently Asked Questions
When did Helping Kids Cope Begin? What is Helping Kids Cope?
Helping Kids Cope officially began in June 2002 and was incorporated
as "Helping Kids Cope Foundation," a not-for-profit corporation
in the state of Tennessee. As far as the IRS is concerned, Helping Kids
Cope is a publicly funded charity (76-0701711) and is exempt from federal
income tax under section 501 (c)(3) of the US Tax Code.
How does Helping Kids Cope differ from other charitable organizations?
1. There is no other organization out there that we have found that
helps birth mothers and children waiting in foster care to be adopted
with receiving an education, or adoptive parents defray the cost of
the adoption expenses regardless of gender, race or age of child they
are wishing to adopt.
2. We want to not only help children find permanent homes but we also
want to empower children to be successful in their life. We also want
birth parents to know that they are amazing and that without them there
would be many lonely couples and for that we are thankful.
3. We are not associated with one organization. Any person can apply
for an award.
Why do you think that giving money to a family that can not
afford an adoption afford a child?
Can you go out today and write a check for $10,000 to $45,000? If not
you are like many people who want to adopt and live comfortably but
are not among the rich and famous then this will start to make sense.
People who are wishing to adopt that can afford a child upon the child’s
arrival but can not afford the child’s “delivery”
we can help. View this award of Helping Kids Cope as an HMO for adoption.
Insurance covers delivery but not adoption.
Who can request these funds?
Any person who has a need, without respect to age, race, religion, nationality,
or anything else. In short, Helping Kids Cope is available to absolutely
everyone.

Why would Helping Kids Cope want to help me with the adoption
cost, or a child in foster care or a birth parent?
This seems too good to be true. What's the catch?
There is no catch, no "angle," and no strings attached. Helping
Kids Cope' single most important goal is to help as many people as it
can.

What can I use these funds for?
Each award is different. The parents-to-be award will help defray the
cost of adoption. The positive choice award will help with education,
or other things related to helping that birth parent excel in life.
The smiles award will help with showing foster care child waiting to
be adopted that they can be productive members in society, this can
be used for educational purposes also.

How do you decide who gets the funds that are available?
Whenever somebody writes to Helping Kids Cope with a request for help,
I read the request carefully and ask myself a series of questions about
it. (And no, I can't tell you what these questions are because that
would make it MUCH easier for people to defraud the site if they wanted
to do so.) If I can answer those questions satisfactorily, and funding
for the request is available, I write to the person involved and ask
(when necessary and appropriate) for verification of the need.

That depends entirely on what kind of help you need. But, most of the
time, people who receive assistance from Helping Kids Cope do not receive
that funding themselves. Instead, the site remits payment for an item
or service on behalf of the person who is receiving help.
